Basketball: Blaze’s hopes extinguished by the Fury from Falkirk

Any hopes Boroughmuir Blaze might have had about springing an upset on unbeaten Scottish Basketball League leaders Falkirk Fury were dashed by half-time in a drab game which Fury won 68-41 at the Crags on Saturday.

This was despite a first-quarter outburst of petulance from Scottish internationalist Scott Russell which resulted in three technical fouls and six free throws, only three of which Blaze converted. Fury pulled away from 14-12 to lead 34-19 at half-time with Glasgow-based French nuclear scientist Walter Lubeigt top-scoring with 18 points and Jonny Bunyan adding 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Edinburgh Kings routed an understrength Dunfermline Reign 101-56 after being 54-21 up at half-time at Queen Anne High, with the Reilly Brothers Lee (27) and Craig (19) combining for 46 points and cadet coach Steven Dickson hitting a season-high 14 points.

The cadets meanwhile had won 73-69 while the Kings juniors gained revenge for their upset at home to Reign at Portobello by winning 101-61.

Edinburgh Kool Kats 
returned with two victories out of three from their trip to 
Arbroath to play Tayside Musketeers yesterday.

Helped by strong 28-11 third quarter, Kats seniors won 
84-51, led by Tracey Phillips with 14, Shauna O’Connor with 13 and Hannah Peacock and Leanne Paige both with 12 while the juniors won a great game 60-58, but the cadettes lost 56-37.

Polonia Phoenix returned to winning ways with a powerful 92-50 win over Pentland Star at the Crags though their cadettes lost 72-62 to Highland Bears.
