Basketball: Ali MacKay on the mend in US

Former Edinburgh Kings and Scotland junior basketball star Ali MacKay has undergone keyhole knee surgery in the United States.

MacKay picked up a cartilage injury in his second season for Davidson University in North Carolina, one of the top college sides in the NCAA.

The operation went so well, however, that the 6ft 10in 21-year-old Great Britain Under-20 cap from North Berwick is already able to undertake non-contact training.

His mother, Rhona, who flew to be with him over Christmas and immediately after the operation said: “It was a meniscus operation and it’s gone very well – he hopes to be back in full training in two weeks’ time.”

MacKay’s younger brother, Grant, is also now on a basketball scholarship in the US, at Hun College in New Jersey.
