Badminton: Two-title Whillans lives up to seeding

SHONA WHILLANS from Longniddry lived up to her top billing by winning both titles at the Bank of Scotland Under-11 national junior badminton championships in Glasgow.

In the singles, Shona defeated unseeded Sarah Sidebottom (Bute) 21-13 in the final and she then joined clubmate Basia Grodynska to win the doubles final 21-10 against Lily Farood and Rachel Lu.

Edinburgh pair Calum Atterbury and Glen Lewington claimed the boys' doubles.

The Capital duo knocked out top seeded Glasgow twins Matthew and Christopher Grimley 21-15 in the semi-finals and then went on to beat Stewart Dyce (Mauchline) and Ciar Pringle (Glasgow) 21-17 in the final. But Christopher ended Calum's hopes of a double with a marathon 25-23 win in the semi-finals of the boys' singles. In a family affair, Christopher then lost 13-21 to Matthew in the final. The twins were joint third seeds and they both caused shocks in the semi-finals as Matthew knocked out the top seed, Dyce 21-19.
