Badminton: Tough task for title-chaser Carder

Matthew Carder faces a tricky start as he bids to land his first under-23 title at the Scottish National Junior Badminton Championships at Meadowbank this weekend.

The South Queensferry top seed can expect to meet reigning under-23 mixed doubles champion Steven Stewart in the second round if the Bonhill player overcomes Craig Rutherford of Coatbridge. Carder is seeded to meet Glasgow’s Danny Leinster in the final and the second seed begins his bid with a second-round test against Kevin Carr (Hamilton) or Peter Walker (Dundee).

Glasgow’s Viktoria Tsvetanova is out to retain her women’s singles title and second seed Megan Richardson has withdrawn due to injury. Tsvetanova starts in the second round against Haddington’s Hannah Laing.

Richardson’s absence is a blow to both Laing and Edinburgh’s Peter Hockey as she was No 1 seed with them in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles. That opens the door for Emma Cook (Mauchline) to retain the women’s doubles title she claimed last year with Tsvetanova as she and Lynne Dargie (Prestwick) are No 2 seeds.
