Badminton: St Michael’s able to savour new arena

St Michael’s Primary is little more than a javelin throw from the new Emirates Arena in Glasgow – and the school situated closest to the 2014 Commonwealth Games venue is reaping the benefits.

The latest outing to the Arena was at an event to mark the upgrade of the Scottish Open Championships to Grand Prix status. A group joined fellow pupils from St Denis Primary and were put through their paces on the badminton court and met two Olympians, Imogen Bankier and Robert Blair.

“We get to play badminton during gym time and I really enjoy it,” said Reece Holmes, a Primary 7 pupil.

His pal, Ashton McGhee, reflected the great bonus of having the Arena as a near neighbour. “We got to take part in the Commonwealth Games Flag Ceremony and we’ve been here for a few visits,” he said.

For all the pupils, the hope is to get the chance to see some of the Commonwealth Games action. Before then, they could get the chance to take part in one of the Play Badminton Carnivals that have become part and parcel of the Scottish Open. This year’s event takes place from 20-24 November.
