Badminton: Scots survive to face England

Edinburgh's Martin Campbell and Troon's Angus Gilmour were the top seeds but had to survive a real scare against Denmark's Florian Schmid and Thomas Heniger before reaching the quarter-finals of the men's badminton doubles at the Yonex Hungarian International in Budaörs.

The Scots dropped the opening game and had a really tight second before going through 6-21, 24-22, 21-15. They now meet England's Chris Coles and Matthew Nottingham, for a place in the semis.

In the first round of the women's singles, 17-year-old Kirsty Gilmour, who competed for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, beat Turkey's Cemre Fere 21-19, 21-14. But the Bothwell teenager then went out 12-21, 8-21 to the No.1 seed from Holland, Judith Meulendijks.

In the mixed doubles, Scotland's Paul van Rietvelde and England's Samantha Ward won a first-round match 21-19, 21-15 against Germany's Till Zander and Gitte Koehler 21-19, 21-15 but then went out 17-21, 16-21 to Danes Jacco Arends and Selena Piek.
