Badminton: Emma Mason on march for medal

EDINBURGH badminton star Emma Mason is just one match away from a medal after reaching the women's doubles quarter-finals with Glasgow's Imogen Bankier at the Yonex European Championships at Manchester's MEN Arena.

The Yonex Scottish Champions had two fine wins to make the last eight – but now come up against the Russian No.2 seeds, Valeria Sorokina and Nina Vislova.

In the women's singles, Glasgow's Susan Hughes, the No.8 seed, also made it into the quarter-finals with an easy 21-12, 21-8 victory over Portugal's Telma Santos. However, Edinburgh's Martin Campbell failed to make it past the first round in the men's doubles. He joined Troon's Angus Gilmour in a 13-21, 16-21 loss to Russia's Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov.

In the first round of the women's event, Mason and Bankier trounced Steffi Annys and Severine Corvilain 21-13, 21-12. They then beat the Swiss pair of Mariona Gruber and Sabrina Jaquet 21-11, 21-18.

Egelstaff's next opponent is the Danish No.2 seed, Tine Rasmussen, who hit top form just a few weeks ago to win the Yonex All-England Open in Birmingham and is sure to be a tough test.
