Badminton: Bankier setback in Olympic Games race

Scotland’s Imogen Bankier and England’s Chris Adcock were knocked out 21-14 13-21 17-21 by Denmark’s Mads Pieler Kolding and Julie Houmann in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles at the Swedish International in Stockholm.

And an added blow came in yesterday’s final when their main rivals for Great Britain’s Olympic place – Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork – claimed the title.

The English pair, currently ranked eight places behind Bankier and Adcock at No 22 in the world, beat Kolding and Houmann 21-17 21-17. In the women’s doubles, Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper and Bothwell’s Kirsty Gilmour beat Sweden’s Sanne Ekberg and Amanda Hogstrom 22-20 21-11 in the quarter-finals before going out to Malaysia’s Eva Lee and Paula Lynn Obanana 23-25 18-21.
