Rory McIlroy overcame back-to-back bogeys to post a second six-under 65 and build a two-shot lead early in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.

McIlroy hit a beautiful approach to eight feet for eagle on the 18th to take the lead for the first time, only to give it back with a 5-wood into the water on the par-5 second hole that led to the first of his two bogeys. He finished at 12-under 130. That gave him a two-shot lead over Ryan Moore, who had a 68.

“Everything seemed to work pretty well out there,” McIlroy said. “I felt like I drove the ball a bit better today and hit more fairways, which gave me some more opportunities to make birdies. And I was putting well enough to take a few of those. Yeah, pleased with where I am.”

Tiger Woods, who had a 64 in the opening round, was playing late last night.
