Ayr 44 - 22 Aberdeen GSFP: Ayr men step up battle for cup places

A FEW Millbrae regulars were posted missing from squad and stand for this meaningless match; perhaps saving their energy and pennies for the Murrayfield trip two weeks hence.

The clutch of fringe players in the home ranks were playing for squad places at the National Stadium and Kenny Murray has a headache of who to omit from his cup final squad.

Scotland Club XV flanker Rob Colhoun’s place in the final was already assured, even before his first half hat-trick of tries put the match out of Aberdeen’s reach.

Robbie Fergusson was a lot less accurate from the kicking tee – two from eight with the boot simply isn’t a good-enough average at this level.

Trailing 3-22 at half time, then 3-34 to tries by Richard Dalgleish and Mark Stewart, Aberdeen responded with well-worked tries by Grant Walker and Steve Aitken, but the Ayr pack ratcheted-up the pressure, replacement Hadyn Wisnewski stormed over and the late tries by Morgan Ward for the visitors and Cammy Taylor for Ayr were mere froth on the top.
