Ayr 31 - 40 Gala: Try frenzy at Millbrae

FOURTEEN-MAN Ayr out-scored Gala by five tries to four, yet still lost a pulsating Millbrae match. The victors are therefore certain to feature in next season’s British & Irish Cup.

Gala deserved to win, but they had no little help from referee Andrew McPherson, who spotted every Ayr offence, but far fewer of Gala’s.

Three Lee Miller penalties and his conversions of superb tries from George Graham and Euan Dods had Gala 23-0 ahead after the same number of minutes, but Ayr’s efforts were rewarded when Colin White plunged over to make it 23-5 at the break.

Ayr’s Ross Curle was in the sin bin when Craig Robertson scored Gala’s third try, again converted by Miller, but Scott Sutherland went over for Ayr’s second unconverted try.

Gordon Reid then scored Ayr’s third try, converted by Andy Wilson, before being red-carded following a spat between the packs.

George Graham scored Gala’s fourth try, converted by Gregor Hunter, but back came Ayr and a penalty try, converted by Sylvan Diez, made it 37-24 to Gala.

Hunter then added a penalty goal before Ayr had the final word through Murray McConnell.
