Athletics: Steph Twell in British team for Poland

STEPH TWELL will continue her comeback from injury at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, a week on Sunday after being named in a 23-strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland team.

Twell, who had her right ankle pinned following a triple fracture in 2011, suffered a stress fracture to the same foot last summer and missed out on selection for the London 2012 Olympics.

But her coach Mick Woods believes she can maintain her current progress in Bydgoszcz. “Steph’s got a track record of pulling it together and running well when it counts,” he said. “But she still has work to do.”

Frank Tickner, who won the world trials in Birmingham, will make his third senior appearance at the event and will be joined in the men’s line-up by Steve Vernon, Michael Skinner, Phil Nicholls and Jonathan Taylor. Twell is joined in the women’s team by Louise Damen, who took the senior women’s title at the world trials, Gemma Steel, Elle Baker, Emily Wicks and Lauren Howarth. Scots pair Freya Ross and Beth Potter are skipping the event, with Ross targeting this weekend’s New York half marathon.
