Athletics: Scots strike gold in Bedford

Two Scots won titles on the second day of the English Inter- Counties Athletics Championships at Bedford yesterday.

Capital student Jamie Bowie won the 400 metres in cold, wet conditions in 47.61 seconds after winning his semi-final in a season's fastest 47.58, while John Carr (Airdrie) confirmed his recent fine form by winning the long jump with a leap of 7.58m.

Capital student Allan Smith (Stevenson) equalled his best high jump of 2.10m competing for Shaftesbury Barnet.
