Athletics: O’Hare sets new PB in 1500 metres

The Scottish all-time list for the 1500 metres had a quite a revision at the weekend following the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, California.

Chris O’Hare (Edinburgh AC) bagged an Olympic qualifying B standard when he smashed his personal best and shaded under 3:38.00 with a time of 3:37.95 which ranks seventh all-time.

But Tulsa University’s O’Hare, the NCAA indoor mile champion, was cross with himself for going too early and making his effort with a lap to go instead of waiting till the final 200 metres, which allowed fellow Scot David Bishop to finish two places ahead of him in 3:37.51.

The winner in an Olympic A standard time of 3:35.19 was fellow Briton Andy Baddeley.

Meanwhile, in the second 1500m race of this multi-race meeting, Kris Gauson (EAC) came back to form to finish fifth in a time of 3:40.16 for 16th on the all-time list.

“That should give me my confidence back,” said Gauson, who like the others will be back to contest the Olympic trials in Birmingham in June.

Guy Learmonth (Lasswade) was fifth in the 800 metres in 1:49.36.
