Athletics: Gauson brothers embark on new challenges in middle-distance world

Capital middle distance track stars Darren and Kris Gauson have both made big career moves, with Darren becoming distance and cross country coach at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, while younger brother Kris has moved to Twickenham to train with former English middle distance star Craig Winrow, who runs a coaching group there.

The Edinburgh Athletic Club brothers, formerly from Haddington, have both held the Scottish 1500 metres title and have spent most of the last five years in the US, where they were based at Butler University in Indiana.

Darren, who had previously been on an athletics scholarship at Butler, became a track coach there, while Kris also went there on an athletics scholarship from the UK and reached the 2011 NCAA 1500m before graduating and returning home to win the Scottish 800m title.

Darren, who won the Scottish 1500m title in both 2004 and 2005, has retired from serious competition and has since been developing his coaching.
