Andy Murray’s Wimbledon had us all a-Twitter

THIS year’s Wimbledon had the world gripped from the start – with relentless Twitter activity to the fore.

More than 6.6 million tweets about Wimbledon were recorded during the fortnight, compared to last year’s 2.5 million, while Facebook reported more than 20 million posts relating to the competition.

Mobile phone provider EE said there was a 39 per increase in traffic on its 4G service during Andy Murray’s final triumph over Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

On the same day, Google recorded more than two million searches for Andy Murray, while over 500,000 people searched for information about his girlfriend Kim Sears. Murray’s victorious tweet: “Can’t believe what’s just happened!!!!” was re-tweeted more than 77,000 times in an hour.

Some websites struggled to keep up with demand, with 25 per cent of visitors to the Eurosport website unable to see pages during the final and loading times for Tennis.co.uk took up to 15 seconds at peak times.
