The Scot, whose first triumph at the All-England Club came in 2013, secured a third Grand Slam crown, following his maiden success at the US Open in 2012.

The first set went with serve until the seventh game when Raonic volleyed into the net to give Murray the break and a 4-3 advantage. The next two went with serve before Murray saw out the set 6-4 in 40 minutes.

In the second, Raonic was being pushed hard by Murray. In the eighth game, the Scot claimed a break point after returning a stunning 147mph serve but the big Canadian showed his battling qualities to hold. The set went to a tie-break with Murray racing into a 3-0 lead before a stunning forehand on Raonic’s serve put him 4-1 ahead. And, after clinching it 7-3, Murray was just one set away from glory.

However, Raonic threatened to strike a blow in game five of the third set, putting Murray under real pressure at 15-40. However, Murray survived the two break points.

Murray held to love to take a 6-5 lead but Raonic took the match into another tie-break. Again, Murray produced the goods, storming into a 5-0 lead before clinching it 7-2.
