Murray was announced as the recipient of the Emirates Lonsdale Trophy for the second year running at the federation’s awards dinner last night in recognition of another stunningly successful year, culminating in his historic victory at the All-England Club in July when the Dunblane player became the first British man to win the men’s singles title in 77 years.

Murray, who was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours and is hot favourite to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year next month, will receive two Business Class flights to Dubai courtesy of Award sponsor Emirates and a cheque for £1,000.

The other finalists were Canoe Slalom World Champion David Florence, Paralympics sprinter Libby Clegg and Lawn Bowls pair Paul Foster and Alex Marshall MBE. They all receive cheques for £250.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer will meet old rival Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals this afternoon after a battling victory over Juan Martin del Potro yesterday.

The first two sets of round-robin results at the O2 Arena had left the pair playing off for the second qualification place in Group B behind Novak Djokovic.

Del Potro led in all three sets but Federer showed his talents extend to scrapping as he fought back to win 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 7-5.

Federer has less than 24 hours to recover for today’s Nadal showdown, which starts at 2pm. Defending champion Novak Djokovic, who faced Richard Gasquet in his meaningless final group match last night, will meet Stanislas Wawrinka in the second semi-final in tonight’s evening session.
