Alex Arthur's bid to fight on his own bill

ALEX ARTHUR is aiming to stage his own boxing bill in Edinburgh after applying to the British Boxing Board of Control for a promoter's licence.

Should the UK governing body approve his application, the former World, European, Commonwealth and British super-featherweight champion hopes to promote his first event at Meadowbank Sports Centre in August. However, Arthur has no thoughts of hanging up his gloves and intends to headline his own promotion while creating the opportunity for his fellow boxers from Edinburgh to kick-start their careers under the AAA Promotions banner.

Arthur said: "I am keen to box at Meadowbank again and there are a lot of talented Edinburgh boxers that aren't getting seen by the public at the moment. I want to change that. If I am granted a promoter's licence by the Board my aim is to provide regular fights for the Edinburgh lads in the city.

"Meadowbank is the home of Edinburgh boxing and there is no better venue in the country in terms of atmosphere generated by a capacity crowd.

"I would not be in a position to apply for the licence and start this venture if it wasn't for the support and backing of my wife Debbie and her experience in events and marketing."
