Accident fails to take shine off Bainfield victories

It was doubles all round for Bainfield at the finals of the Edinburgh Women’s Bowling Association Championships with the Hutchison Crossway supporters celebrating wins in the Pairs and Triples after play ended at Brunstane.

Sighthill captured the Fours and Tipperlinn the Singles but, sadly, the occasion was blighted by a serious incident in the early stages of the Singles that saw Beechwood champion Betty Eaton suffer a bad fall on a rain-sodden surface.

“Betty was shaken by her fall and was unable to continue so forfeited the match to Shona Johnstone of Tipperlinn in accordance with our rules and regulations,” said a spokeswoman for the EWBA.

The latest news on the nine-times champion of Beechwood is that she is sorely bruised and has damaged her ligaments, tendons and muscles and is now on crutches after attending the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh with the instructions of no more bowling this season.

The finalists were marched on to the green to the skirl of the pipes accompanied by real “Thunder and Lightning in the Sky” and Eaton commented: “I thought to myself at the time we were all in danger of being fried never mind soaked to the skin.”

Johnstone is already a legend of the Steel Trophy having won it a record five times and was making it six – and four in a row – when awarded her latest title at 8-2 up. “There is no honour or celebration in this one though,” she said.

Bainfield’s Susan Allan and Susan Brown captured the Pairs title having led 10-3 then raced from 10-6 to 17-6 with a run of 1, 2, 3, 1 en route to a commanding 19-9 win over Margaret Hume and Margaret Keenan of Summerside.

Anna Anderson is a top name on the Bainfield scene and she delivered a title success in the Triples having skipped Liz McIntyre and Dorothy Barclay into a 12-3 lead then on to a 15-12 win over Betty Simpson, Margaret Mullen and Jeanette Darling of Merchiston.

Sighthill etched their name on the Fours trophy with Kathleen Barr skipping Alice Kidd, Gerry McKenzie and Delores Forsyth from 4-5 to 13-5 then on to a 17-7 win over Rose Cartledge, Ellen Hay, Evelyn Lowe and Mary Birnie of Corstorphine.
