Scotland continued to suffer mixed fortunes in the Girls’ and Women’s Home Internationals at Conwy in North Wales.

After two wins, the latest being a 6-3 victory over defending champions England, the Scottish girls’ team now face Ireland in a title decider today.

The Scots were 2.5-0.5 up after the morning foursomes before Shannon McWilliam, Jillian Farrell and Hazel McGarvie all delivered decisive singles successes.

In contrast, the women’s team suffered their second disappointment of the week as they went down 6-3 to the same opponents.

It had looked promising after a 2-1 win in the morning session only for England to take the singes 5-1, with Heather Munro’s 4&2 victory at the bottom of the order sparing the Scots from an afternoon whitewash.

The Scots left themselves with a mountain to climb after losing the morning foursomes 4-1 before battling to a 5-5 share of the singles.

Afternoon winners for a team that had Scott Knowles as its non-playing captain were Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links), Darren Howie (Peebles), Michael Lawrie (Deeside) and Matthew McCulloch (Portpatrick).

“The boys really battled hard, but, unfortunately, we left ourselves too much to do after losing the foursomes 4-1,” said Knowles.

“With nine holes to go we still had a chance, our boys threw everything at them but they held us off and congratulations to England.”
