Bearing the figure of a swimmer, the coins have been struck for distribution to banks and cash centres. They will now start making their way into the nation’s pockets.

The design of the 50p coin has been unveiled previously, and swimmer Jazz Carlin made a trip to the Mint to strike a commemorative precious metal 50p.

The precious metal versions went on sale earlier this year and a gold version of the coin is available to buy from the Mint’s website for £755.

Like the precious metal versions, many of the new 50p coins appearing in people’s change could also make it into collections. The Mint estimates that more than 70% of 50p coins released to celebrate London 2012 have been collected.

Anne Jessopp, the Royal Mint’s director of commemorative coin, said “We are thrilled to be able to show our support for Team GB in this way, and celebrate the talent, dedication and Olympian spirit of the athletes chosen to represent us in what we hope will be yet another piece of Great British sporting history for the team.”
