Six Nations: Scotland call up three players ahead of Wales match

Scotland have called three players into their squad ahead of Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations clash with Wales, while releasing four back to their clubs.

Head coach Gregor Townsend has drafted in Edinburgh backs George Taylor and Charlie Shiel and Glasgow forward D’arcy Rae to help with preparations for this weekend’s game at BT Murrayfield.

Scotland are looking to building on their stunning win over England at Twickenham on the opening weekend of the Championship.

Blair Kinghorn, the versatile back-three player, has been allowed to return to Edinburgh who have a Pro14 game on Friday night against Dragons in Wales. Uncapped hooker Ewan Ashman has similarly been released back to Sale Sharks.

Jamie Dobie and Rufus McLean, two of the young Glasgow Warriors players who have been training with the full Scotland squad to gain experience, have been sent back to Scotstoun to prepare for Saturday’s home Pro14 match against Benetton.

Wales come north after an impressive win over Ireland. The result was a fillip for their under-pressure coach Wayne Pivac who had a difficult first year in charge after taking over from Warren Gatland.

“I think any team takes time to settle under a new head coach, a new coaching team who are looking to bring in a slightly different style of play,” said Scotland scrum-half Ali Price. “But that doesn’t get away from the fact that they’re still world-class players.

“You’ve got guy like George North potentially winning a hundred caps, Alun Wyn Jones a hundred-odd caps, Ken Owens is right up there, Jonathan Davies, Dan Biggar …

“They just need time to adjust to certain subtle changes a new coach can bring in.”
