THEATRE: THE CHOIR

Written by two Scots, The Choir is a bold but heartwarming musical play about a dysfunctional community choir working to overcome their social and cultural differences. Actor Paul Higgins (who you may recognise from The Thick of It) and Deacon Blue singer Ricky Ross collaborated on the script and songs, taking inspiration from The Gorbals Community Choir, of which Ross is a member. See – and hear – art imitate life at Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre.

EXHIBITION: PAUL BARNES - NATURE’S WAY

Get back in touch with your childlike sense of wonder by visiting Paul Barnes’s latest Edinburgh exhibition, Nature’s Way. Inspired by his three children and the beautiful surroundings of his home in the north of Scotland, Barnes’ work features stylised creatures with almost-human features and emotive paintings. While the artist’s style has remained consistent throughout his career, the dark palette used in Nature’s Way adds depth and intrigue to his newer pieces.

MUSIC: LUCY ROSE

English folk-rock singer-songwriter Lucy Rose comes to Aberdeen tonight as part of an extensive UK tour. Rose, 26, got her big break after featuring on Bombay Bicycle Club’s acoustic album Flaws in 2010, and since then has toured with Noah and the Whale, headlined music festivals and released two solo albums. Inspired by acts like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, Rose’s latest effort Work It Out was released in July this year and reached number nine in the UK’s album charts.

DANCE: ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLET - GISELLE

The Royal New Zealand Ballet troupe bring the 175-year-old classic Giselle to life this evening for the first of a brief run of performances at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre. Produced by dancers Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg, this new production combines Giselle’s age old tale of love, jealousy and heartbreak with the best of modern ballet.

COMEDY: RED RAW

The Stand’s long-running weekly comedy showcase Red Raw is a chance to see comedy at its most unvarnished. Up to ten new comedians will try their hand at stand-up, some for the very first time. Head along to suss out who Scotland’s next comedy star will be. Famous faces sometimes drop by unannounced to test out new material.
