What’s On In Scotland: Five things to do tonight

Sonica Festival gets under way in Glasgow this evening.

MUSIC: PALACE

Glasgow’s world-famous spit n’ sawdust venue King Tut’s remains firmly on the front foot when it comes to hosting up-and-coming new bands. Tonight is the turn of dreamy indie rockers Palace, currently on the back of a UK tour promoting their latest record Chase The Light EP. The London-based group have picked up steam in the last six months, with a number of sold out dates so far.

FILM: RED ARMY

A fascinating documentary shining a light on the blurred lines between politics and sport. Gabe Polisky takes a detailed look at Moscow’s Red Army hockey team – from their grueling training regime to their place as pawns at the heart of 1980s Soviet propaganda. Reels of stunning archive footage and great insight from those directly involved.

THEATRE: THINGUMMYBOB

The award-winning Lung Ha theatre company bring their latest production to Edinburgh tonight. Linda Mclean’s Thingummybob, tells the story of Bob, an elderly man who has lost something important to him, but can’t remember exactly what it is. The daughter of an old friend is looking to help him, but it’s a race against time and Bob’s own memory.

EVENT: SONICA FESTIVAL

After a succesful international tour, Sonica Festival returns home to Glasgow for eight days of exhibitions on sonic art (combining sound, visual and digital media disciplines). The festival gets underway tonight at Tramway with a performance by Speak Percussion, an Australian percussive ensemble who have collaborated with visual artist Red Fox on a truly unique show. COMEDY: ALAN CARR

Now best known as one of the biggest name on the chat show scene, Alan Carr has returned to comedy roots with the ‘Yap, Yap, Yap!’ tour. The bespectacled stand-up will be taking to the stage at the Clyde Auditorium this evening and for the following two nights.
