“I’m hoping a gentleman from a certain pantomine falls down my chimney this year.”

Before she pressed the button on the Gold Stage, at the end of George Street, the I Dreamed a Dream singer sang her own version of Silent Night.

She was cheered on by the crowd as they joined her in a ten second countdown before she illuminated the city, which marked the beginning of Edinburgh’s Christmas activites.

The sky then turned into a rainbow of colour when fireworks were set off from Charlotte Square.

Thousands of people descended onto George Street for this year’s ‘Light Night’, which seen 60 community groups from across Edinburgh perform on seven different stages, as well as the main switch-on event.

Susan Boyle was joined on stage by 10 year-old Gracie Linn, who has recently recovered from cancer.

She was representing Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens – the charity which Edinburgh’s Christmas supports.

Donald Wilson, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost also made a speech to the crowd.
