When he was 10, Mr Mitchell, from Dundee, had one of his fingers torn off in a freak accident, and thought his dreams of becoming a bagpipe player were gone.

He will attend the event early next month and has also been invited to the black tie after-party.

His mother, Lara Mitchell, believed her son was joking when he called to tell her about his 007 call-up.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it but it’s absolutely true. It is so exciting and I am so proud of John.”

Mr Mitchell also played the bagpipes at the medal ceremonies at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
