Scotland 2 Germany 3: How the players rated

SCOTLAND

David Marshall - Deceived by the deflection for Muller’s first but couldn’t be blamed for failing to hold Can’s shot before Muller netted again. Made some decent second-half stops. 6

Alan Hutton - The right-back looked like Scotland’s best attacking hope at times with several marauding runs and let no one in behind him. 6

Charlie Mulgrew - A couple of decent runs up the left helped get Scotland going and the Celtic man was generally reliable in defence, although he struggled to deal with Can’s daunders down the wing. 5

Russell Martin - Unfortunate with the deflection that led to Muller’s opener, and was his usual dependable self in partnership with Hanley. 6

Grant Hanley - A solid comeback to the starting line-up, and can be happy with his display. 6

James McArthur - A failed attempt at an interception allowed Muller space to grab the opener but he made up for it in style with a controlled volley that flew past a nonplussed Neuer. 6

Scott Brown - Failed to track Gundogan either side of the return pass that led to Germany’s third goal. The skipper struggled off the ball and was rarely on it but an improvement on Tbilisi. 5

James Morrison - Far livelier from the West Brom man, who played a big part in both of Scotland’s goals by putting off Neuer. Good pressing and quick passing too, although took a risk with two fouls on Kroos after being booked. 8

Shaun Maloney - His deliveries led to both Scotland goals although some poor German defending certainly contributed. Was caught ball-watching as Can raced forward ahead of Germany’s second. 6

James Forrest - Had the beating of his man but had few opportunities to cause the German defence any real problems. 5

Steven Fletcher - Some decent link-up play but was often isolated and couldn’t cause the visitors a problem. 5

Substitutes

Ikechi Anya (for Maloney, 60) - A couple of bits of skill led to decent crosses. 5

Matt Ritchie (for Forrest, 81) - Looked sharp and enthusiastic in his short time on the park and delivered some good balls. 5

Chris Martin (for Brown, 81) - Could not get a chance after being thrown on for the finale as Strachan threw two up front in a bid to take something from the game. 3

GERMANY

Manuel Neuer - Made a complete mess of Maloney’s free-kick to gift Scotland their first and didn’t look too clever on their second either. 5

Emre Can - The Liverpool right-back looked vulnerable at times but made his mark going forward. 6

Jonas Hector - The left-back did enough at the back and used the ball well. 6

Jerome Boateng - Strong in and out of possession, but looked concerned at Anya’s pace when the Watford man came on on the hour mark. 6

Mats Hummels - Little he could do with the own goal as Neuer’s fumble saw the ball cannon off the Dortmund defender and fly into the net but otherwise comfortable. 6

Toni Kroos - Missed few opportunities to move the ball forward from his central midfield role. 8

Bastian Schweinsteiger - Dominated the ball in the first half and rarely, if ever, gave possession away. 8

Thomas Muller - Once again got a double against Scotland as he picked the perfect moments to burst into the box. 8

Ilkay Gundogan - A lovely finish in off the post won the game for Germany, and he proved an effective link between midfield and attack. 7

Mesut Ozil - A relatively quiet night on the left but still played a role in the second goal. 6

Mario Gotze - Had the ball in the net twice but well offside each time. 6

Substitutes

Andre Schurrle (for Gotze, 86) - Germany were defending for much of the time he was on. 3

Christoph Kramer (for Ozil, 90) - Came on for the Arsenal midfielder to run down the clock at the death. 2
