Resounding victory was only a matter of time, says Stuart McCall

MOTHERWELL manager Stuart McCall believes his team’s thumping Clydesdale Bank Premier League win over Inverness in the Highland capital had been on the cards for a while.

McCall’s men raced into a two-goal lead at the interval courtesy of efforts by Michael Higdon and Jamie Murphy. Caley Thistle threatened to make a game of it when Richie Foran halved the deficit two minutes into the second half but further goals by Adam Cummins, Henrik Ojamaa and substitute Omar Daley eased the visitors to a resounding triumph.

Despite some indifferent form of late, the Motherwell manager felt his side had been on the cusp of recording a convincing victory for some time.

McCall, whose side climbed to fourth in the table on the back of the result, said: “It’s easy after the event to say that it had been coming.

“However, I’ve been pleased with the way the team has been performing generally. The only thing missing is that we’ve not scored when we’re on top in these matches.”

He added: “We’ve created chances, got a good threat middle to front. We’ve got to be solid at the back. I think a lot of teams in this division have good forward players and it’s about how you defend. Inverness are top scorers and to limit them to one goal today was very good and, obviously, to score five was tremendous.”

McCall pointed to his team’s home form as an area in which they could build on yesterday’s success. “That’s us won four away from home – we’ve only won once at home,” he said. “We’re at home to Hearts next week and we’ve got to not have that feeling that we can’t win at home, because we’ve been playing well. We just need to take our chances and today it came off.” Caley Thistle manager Terry Butcher conceded that he and his players will not spend much time looking at the DVD of where they went wrong against a Motherwell side that ended their ten-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

He said: “We never played from the first whistle to the last. We were comprehensively beaten.

“We just never got going today and that was disappointing, especially in front of a television audience. It’s one of these games that we’ll have a look at the DVD, although not a long one, then we’ll throw it in the bin and move on from there.”
