It’s now over a month since McCall walked away from Fir Park and his erstwhile assistant, Kenny Black, has been in temporary charge since. However, it is understood the Motherwell board are now keen to speak to Shiels, who guided Kilmarnock to League Cup success in 2012.

Shiels, 58, is currently employed as director of the Forth Valley Football Academy after a short spell in charge of Morton.
