Gomis was a member of United’s 2010 cup winning side which destroyed Ross County at Hampden, and the 28-year-old midfielder insists it is the highlight of his career to date.

Gomis, who has signed for Jackie McNamara’s men until the end of the season, is bidding to kick-start his career on Tayside after leaving English outfit Birmingham back in the summer, having joined them from United in 2011. The Senegal international would love nothing more than to scoop another cup as he gears up to try to recapture the kind of form which made him a fans’ favourite the first time round.

Gomis said: “I had a great four-and-a-half years at Dundee United before so I’m delighted to be back. The highlight was obviously winning the Scottish Cup. I will never forget that and hopefully the same can happen again.

“You always look back at what you did in your career. I celebrated the whole occasion with my friends and family that night which was amazing. I was still speaking to a lot of the boys before I came back. And whenever we chatted, the cup win was always brought up. It’s so special that way.”

McNamara’s new-look United have hit form in recent weeks in the SPFL and later this month they head to Inverness for their League Cup quarter-final with Caley Thistle, which Gomis hopes can pave the way for another fairytale ending.

He said: “I hope we can win the League Cup, of course. The manager here has a good squad and winning the cup would be something nice for the club. Hopefully it can be something that happens again this season.”

Gomis endured the summer from hell and admitted he is thrilled to be back on Tayside. He added: “The manager asked me if I wanted to sign again. So I was very happy because I didn’t have anything and just wanted to play football again.”
