Mark Warburton wants more goal threat from Rangers

RANGERS manager Mark Warburton has declared his team are well prepared for the start of their Championship title bid this week but believes they still need to sharpen up in front of goal if they are to fulfil their potential this season.

Warburton’s first competitive home fixture in the job saw Rangers defeat Peterhead 3-0 in the first round of the League Cup with goals from David Templeton, Kenny Miller and James Tavernier. But they missed a host of other chances against their League One opponents at Ibrox.

Despite seeing Rangers score nine goals in his first two games in charge, following the 6-2 Petrofac Training Cup demolition of Hibs, Warburton is seeking improvement in that department ahead of their opening league fixture at home to St Mirren on Friday.

“We have to learn to be more clinical in front of goal to get our just rewards,” said Warburton.

“It’s important to have players who are flexible in the attacking positions. You have to be able to play anywhere across that front line. You saw Kenny Miller turn up left and right, Barrie McKay left and right and then Martyn Waghorn came out to the right in the second half.

“It’s important to us to keep working on that, on breaking teams down and keeping moving the ball. I was delighted with it, but I just want the players to get their rewards.”
