Leigh Griffiths bemused at not being called in

The 23-year-old, who was the SPL’s top scorer during a loan spell at Hibs last season, looked to be establishing himself in Gordon Strachan’s plans over the summer after starting back-to-back World Cup qualifiers away to Croatia and at home to Belgium.

However, despite being named in the squad for the last qualifier at home to Croatia, he wasn’t involved in the match last month and was subsequently left out of the current squad for the friendly double-header against USA and Norway, with Steven Fletcher and Ross McCormack instead coming in to fill the attacking berths.

When Kilmarnock striker Boyd, who has scored six goals in the Scottish Premiership this season, was called up in place of Fletcher yesterday, Griffiths, who has scored ten goals for Wolves in League One, took to Twitter to vent his frustration. He tweeted: “Gutted with 3 call offs I ain’t got called up to the squad, just need to keep head down and work even harder... #Scotland #doublefigures.”

Griffiths’ omission could be down to the fact he has been on the bench for Wolves’ last two games, although manager Kenny Jackett hailed the Scot’s impact as he came on to help inspire a 1-0 win at Notts County on Saturday that took Wolves top of the league.
