Rangers set to sign Jon Daly from Dundee United

• Carlos Bocanegra edges towards Ibrox exit

The 30-year-old has agreed to join the club after discussions began in January over a transfer from Dundee United.

Daly, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been employed in both defence and attack at Tannadice, but will likely be asked to play as a forward for Ally McCoist.

MK Dons and Hibernian had been in pursuit of Daly, but Rangers won out despite the fact they will start next season in the Second Division.

Daly is expected to sign for the club next week, but will not be able to register until September 1 because of a transfer embargo imposed on Rangers.

The former Hartlepool striker will become the first player from the Republic of Ireland to play for Rangers in 80 years.

Meanwhile, defender Carlos Bocanegra is likely to leave Rangers once he returns from his loan spell in Spain.

The US international is one of Rangers’ highest earners. Offers for the 33-year-old would be listened to by the club.

It is understood that clubs from the MLS, England and Europe are monitoring the situation.

A move away from Rangers is expected to reignite his international career, having not been considered for selection since Rangers’ relegation to the Third Division.
