The Wee County captain helped sink Huntly to move his team to within six points of the leaders.

For Morrison, a title winner with Buckie Thistle in 2011, the gritty victory at Huntly on the back of a massive win over Formartine is proof of Nairn’s emergence as championship candidates.

The experienced centre-half said: “We’ve got all the potential in the world, but we’ll still  keep taking each game as it comes.”

In horrendous conditions, Neale Davidson fired Huntly into a 23rd minute lead, with the help of a deflection off Morrison. But summer signing from Elgin City Stuart Leslie levelled with a low strike in first-half stoppage time.

The second half belonged to Nairn with Conor Gethins claiming his 18th of the season before the hour and Robbie Duncanson scoring for the second week running.

Formartine moved back to the top of the perch after a thrilling 4-3 home victory over Buckie. Cammy Keith’s late clincher ensured Steve Paterson’s side capitalised on Brora’s Scottish Cup involvement at Clyde.

Wick Academy eased into second place with a 4-1 victory at Clach, with last week’s eight-goal hero Gary Weir netting only once. Paul Whyte had given hosts Clach the lead, but Wick ran away with it with Lukasz Geruzel, Richard Macadie and David Allan also on target.

Fort William seized their first win of the season at Keith in a 3-2 triumph, while Lossiemouth won 2-1 at Strathspey.
