Video: Man proposes on ScotRail train with flashmob

Their romantic engagement on a Scots train at the weekend has now been viewed 750,000 times on social media.

The happy couple can be revealed as Stuart Mathie, 56, and his 43-year-old fiancée Michelle McGrillen.

A flash mob choir burst into song as the couple were returning from a romantic dinner in Glasgow on the 9.07pm train to Hamilton on Saturday night.

They belted out Frankie Valli’s ballad “You’re Just Too Good To Be True” before Stuart dropped to one knee and proposed to a stunned Michelle.

Yesterday, as the beaming mum-of-two turned up for work in Hamilton, fellow civil servants welcomed her with their own rendition of the song.

Michelle’s joy was tinged with sadness. Her husband, Paul McGrillen, died suddenly at the couple’s home in Hamilton six years ago.

The 37-year-old was a former professional footballer, who was part of Motherwell FC’s Scottish Cup-winning squad in 1991.

One of the couple’s two children, 16-year-old Joshua was partly responsible for the internet frenzy, posting the clip online.

Michelle said yesterday:”It was crazy. We got off the train at Hamilton and I was receiving ‘congratulations’ texts before we had even reached home.

“There was a panic on because we thought ‘we’ll need to tell our family – they can’t find out on Facebook!”

The Brief Encounter on the Scotrail service was the result of meticulous planning by Stuart, an online marketing executive from Cambuslang in South Lanarkshire.

The dad-of-one said:”I wanted to propose to Michelle but I wanted it to be special.

“I wondered about the Trevi Fountain in Rome... or at the top of Ben Nevis.

“I had seen lots of stuff about flash mobs and I thought that might be a good idea. I contacted the SoundRoutes Singers in Hamilton and asked if they had any singers spare for a rather unusual performance.

“I thought I might get three or four but when they heard what the ‘performance’ was, they all wanted to do it.

“I sent them pictures of what Michelle and I look like and they replied with their photos, so I would know who they were on the train.

“They shuffled about on the platform in twos and threes at Argyle Street as we went for the train. After we left Rutherglen, one person began singing randomly, then another, then they all burst into song.”

Michelle, who also has a daughter, Chloe, aged 12, said:”The songs were the ones we both like. I turned to Stuart and asked if this was anything to do with him, but he said ‘no’.

“So we started joining in and clapping our hands as well. I couldn’t believe it when he proposed. It’s typical of him – when he went on holiday for a week, I received a card every day, with poems on it and it always ended with ‘PS. I Love You.’

“He had arranged with a secretary to post me a card every day while he was away.”

The couple are making plans to wed, possibly later next year.

Michelle added:”I’m really glad he picked Rutherglen to pop the question – I didn’t fancy the top of Ben Nevis!”
