Scots teenager dies in Ibiza from ‘ecstasy overdose’

The teenager, understood to be Danielle McCallum, 18, died in the intensive care unit at the island’s Can Misses Hospital.

She was rushed to hospital several hours earlier from a health clinic close to the hotel she was staying in.

Danielle, from Greenock, Scotland, was admitted in a critical condition on arrival and experienced heart failure shortly before she died.

A hospital spokesman said her friends had told doctors that she had taken drugs, but the outcome of toxicology report is still to be published.

Dozens of Danielle’s friends have now taken to social media to pay tribute to the teenager.

Caitlyn Anderson wrote: “We are all very heartbroken and still trying to come to terms with what has happened.”

Rhianda Thomson wrote: “I was hoping the news wasn’t true you will be missed xx RIP Danielle.”

Spanish newspapers reported that a female friend with Danielle told doctors she had consumed several MDMA tablets in San Antonio before she fell ill.

An autopsy was carried out to try to determine whether her death was the result of drug use.

Tissue samples will also be sent to a specialist lab in Barcelona so a comprehensive study can take place in determining her cause of death.

Civil Guard officers have already launched an investigation and plan to log a report to a judge tasked with a full judicial probe into the case.

In one of her final Facebook posts, Danielle showed a picture of her face with a cut and severely bruised eye and warning people to “stay aff” drink.

Just just before her death, the teenager joked about being stranded with no money and no shoes while enjoying her holiday.

She told pals: “Can this get any worse.”

A spokesman for Hospital Can Misses said: “The patient came to the hospital by ambulance at 6am yesterday morning. She was taken into intensive care. She died two hours later after her heart stopped.

“She is 18 years old and from the UK, Scotland. It is suspected that she took some drugs but it is not sure.

“This is what her friends said to the doctors that treated this patient.

“We are now making toxological tests so we know what she took.”

A Foreign Office spokesman added: “We are in contact with local authorities in Ibiza following the death of a British national on September 22.

“We have met with the family and will continue to provide support at this difficult time.”

The death of Brit mechanic Alan Drennan in July was also locally blamed on a drug overdose.

The 21-year-old from Newtownabbey, Country Antrim, was found dead in his hotel room in San Antonio.

But friends and family have accused the island’s authorities of a cover-up and Alan’s friends later claimed he told them he had been beaten up by Spanish police in the airport.
