Natalie McGarry ‘gave four-figure sum to Women for Independence’

NATALIE McGarry gave a four-figure sum to Women for Independence before police were called into probe missing donations, it has been revealed.

The Daily Record reports that the Glasgow East MP gave the cash to the pro-independence group - which she helped establish - after a five-figure sum in donations was found to be unaccounted for.

It was reported earlier this week that the majority of the missing money was believed to have been linked to a PayPal account connected with Ms McGarry’s bank account.

The 34-year-old Fife-born MP, who succeeded Labour’s Margaret Curran with a 10,387 majority at the General Election in May, resigned the SNP whip on Tuesday.

A source close to Ms McGarry told the Record that she was ‘in the process of trying to sort out what was a shambles’, and was said to be ‘shocked and dismayed’ when the police were contacted over the missing cash.

It is understood that the four-figure sum handed over to Women for Independence was related to Ms McGarry’s attempts to sort out the group’s accounts.

Ms McGarry took charge of the group’s finances prior to her election to Westminster.

Ms McGarry has denied any wrongdoing and has already contacted police offering to discuss the situation. Officers have not established any criminality took place surrounding the missing funds.

Ms McGarry’s solicitor Aamer Anwar has said it would be ‘inappropriate to comment’ until all the facts have been provided to both Women for Independence and the police.
