Paul Barry joins the firm after six years with French rival Bureau Veritas, where he most recently held the position of chief executive for north-west Europe, responsible for 1,500 employees across eight countries.

At Exova, he will be in charge of 64 facilities in 12 countries, leading a team of more than 1,700 testing and calibration experts supporting customers in sectors including aerospace, industrials, energy and health sciences.

Chief executive Ian El-Mokadem said: “Paul brings excellent credentials in leading and growing major businesses.

“Well-versed in a variety of relevant industries, such as energy, utilities and infrastructure, and with a solid track record working with pan-European teams, Paul is highly driven and committed to strengthening and growing our European business.”

Exova, which floated on London’s main market last year, employs about 4,500 people around the world, including 225 in Scotland.

The firm runs oil and gas laboratories in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, where it also has a pharmaceuticals facility, along with an environmental testing site in Glasgow.

In August, the company reported a first-half profit of £10 million, compared with a £38.1m loss a year earlier, after overcoming a contraction in the oil and gas market.
