CGI won the £6.5 million contract to reduce the time it takes to count single transferable votes for 1,200 candidates in more than 350 wards across Scotland.

The company performed the same job at the 2012 local elections and said it can dramatically reduce the time it takes to count ballots.

Local government minister Marco Biagi said: “The Scottish Government will work with CGI to deliver an effective e-counting system.”
