The Evening News revealed in July 2014 that Labour had launched an investigation into the Edinburgh Eastern constituency party after almost £10,000 went missing from the accounts and treasurer Karen Rennie had been suspended from the party while the inquiry was carried out.

After a more detailed examination of the accounts, the party has revised the amount unaccounted for to £4500.

A Labour spokesman said: “Following a thorough investigation by the Labour Party this matter was passed to the police with £4,500 unaccounted for.

“It is important to note in this case that the Constituency Labour Party is the victim of a potential crime.”

Ms Rennie remains suspended.

Police said their inquiries were continuing.
