The largest of Britain’s “fulfilment centres” is in Dunfermline, which has recently taken on hundreds of new seasonal employees to help process orders and opened a temporary lorry park after two years of complaints from residents – lorries which now cannot go via the Forth Road Bridge.

With record online sales a week ago on so-called Black Friday, there were concerns about logistics in the coming weeks.

An Amazon spokesman said there would be no extra costs for deliveries and that items could come from their ten fulfilment centres in the UK.

He said: “We are confident that the closure of the Forth [Road] Bridge will not impact our ability to deliver the service that our customers expect of us in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Amazon has a network of ten fulfilment centres in the UK and each of these serve customers across the country. We are used to dealing with transport disruptions and put in place contingency measures to ensure we continue to provide the highest levels of service to our customers.”

The Dunfermline site, just a few miles north of the bridge, was opened in 2011 by then First Minister Alex Salmond, who also toured the Edinburgh call-centre at the time.

Amazon’s website boasts: “Our fulfilment centre in Dunfermline is the biggest in the UK. The size of 14 football pitches, in fact – that’s 1,000,000 square feet. The site itself is right next to the M90 and A92, so it’s within easy reach of Edinburgh, Stirling and St Andrews.”
