Frank Watt and Cheryl Johnstone were also placed on the sex offenders register over their public escapade on November 5 last year.

Johnstone was spotted by a CCTV operator at the bridge performing a sex act on Watt as they sat on a wall beside the staircase that leads to the path on the Tay Road Bridge.

The shocked worker went out and told the pair to stop at 2.15pm.

But when he got back to his post he saw the pair had in fact escalated - with both engaging in full sexual intercourse.

At least five members of the public walked and cycled past the pair as they romped - with the worker again going out to shout at them.

When police turned up 35 minutes after they were first spotted Watt and Johnstone were pulling up their trousers.

The stairwell entrance is overlooked by a busy main road connecting the east end of Dundee to the city centre - with hundreds of cars driving past every hour.

Fiscal depute Isma Mukhtar told Dundee Sheriff Court: “The CCTV operator became aware of the accused sitting on the concrete base at the public stairwell which leads to the footpath on the Tay Road Bridge.

“The operator could see the accused Johnstone appeared to be performing oral sex on accused Watt.

“This continued for a number of minutes and the operator left the control room to walk to the bridge and shouted at them to stop.

“He returned to the control room and on going back to view the monitor saw the accused Johnstone had resumed and both then pulled their trousers down, exposing their genitals and engaging in full sexual intercourse with each other.

“As they were doing so several members of the public had to walk past both of them.

“The accused didn’t stop when the members of the public had gone past.

“The operator went back and again shouted to them to stop what they were doing and again that did not deter them and they both carried on in the manner narrated.

“Further members of the public were exposed to their behaviour because of the continuation of the accused.

“Police attended at 2.50pm and found them getting their clothes back on.

Watt, 31, of Tulloch Court, Dundee, and Johnstone, 32, of Hilltown Court, Dundee, both pled guilty a charge of public indecency. Watt further admitted possessing £10 worth of cannabis when he was taken to police HQ in Dundee.

Defence solicitor Ross Donnelly, representing Watt, said: “He has a number of other matters outstanding.

“He does have convictions for the likes of public disorder.

“He has had alcohol difficulties.”

Lesley Beats, defending Johnstone, asked for her bail to be continued ahead of sentencing.

Sheriff John Rafferty deferred sentence until April 9 for social work background reports and placed both on the sex offenders register meantime.
