The Heartstart Discovery course teaches members of the public emergency life support skills.

The not-for-profit organisation Heartstart Discovery is running free two-hour training sessions in emergency life support for members of the public in locations throughout Scotland later this month.

It is hoped that by providing people with the basic means to care for a casualty, the chances of survival for those injured should increase.

Helen Brady, Heartstart Discovery Co-ordinator said, “Emergency life support skills really do save lives so please consider registering for a session today.

“A Heartstart session could prove to be one of the most important training sessions you have ever undertaken in your life. You can make a difference.”

The free of charge courses are provided at a variety of locations and require no previous medical knowledge. With each course lasting two hours, participants will learn how to care for an unconscious person who is or is not breathing. CPR knowledge will also be shared, as well as information on how to recognise the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and how to deal with one.

Attendees will also be taught techniques designed to help those who are choking or bleeding badly.

Courses are free-of-charge and no medical knowledge is required in order to undertake one. It only takes two hours to learn the skills which may save a life and it is very likely that the person you help may be a family member or someone close to you.

Places for Heartstart courses are available at the following times and places throughout October:

Monday 19 October, Blairgowrie, 6 - 8pm

Saturday 24 October, Perth, 10am- 12 noon

Wednesday 28 October, Dundee, 7 - 9pm

Friday 30 October, Montrose, 10.30am - 12.30pm

Training sessions can also be arranged on request for groups, organisations and clubs.
