Dad raises money after donating his kidney to son

A GRATEFUL dad has raised more than £2,000 for a Scottish hospital after they treated his seriously ill son.

Brave Tony Green saved his son’s life by donating his own kidney and has now donated £2,500 to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee after his son was treated by the hospital’s renal team.

Eight years ago, Anthony Green was just 21 when he fell seriously ill and was placed on the NHS transplant list during long-term care at the Ninewells unit.

What should have been the prime of Green’s life was spent travelling back and forth to hospital for treatment, until his father Tony gave his son one of his kidneys.

Tony said, “I wanted to say a big thank you to the staff at renal unit at Ninewells Hospital for everything they did for Anthony.

“I also want to thank all my family and friends for their kind donations. I hope this money will help other people.

“I decided to become an organ donor as I wanted to help my son and give him the quality of life we had always hoped for him. I would also like to encourage people to think about organ donation by joining the organ donor register.”

Despite parents Tony and Linda registered to become donors along with Anthony’s siblings, Tony was found to be the most suitable donor after several tests.

Tony’s generous contribution was partly due to his recent retirement party at the City Sports & Social Club in Perth. Leaving behind his job at Scotrail, Tony encouraged friends and family to make a donation to the renal unit where Anthony was treated.

Transplant coordinator Irene Russell said: “Tony has shown us what a wonderful act of kindness, generosity and love can do to transform another person’s life.

“To really show the impact of this kind act, you can look no further than Anthony himself, who is now healthy and is a dad himself.

“We want to say thank you to Tony and his family and friends for their generous donation.”
