Goodwillie almost netted after just five minutes. However, the on-loan Blackburn Rovers man’s shot was charged down by Ryan Scully and it was the Pars that opened the scoring five minutes later.

Ross Millen’s corner found Chris Kane, but he failed to make a connection, and Josh Falkingham drove the ball home from ten yards out.

The advantage was short-lived as Ryan Gauld curled a 20-yard free kick high into the home net on 20 minutes.

Goodwillie finally scored on 52 minutes when he netted from six yards after great build-up play by Stuart Armstrong.

United introduced eight substitutes just before the hour mark and one of the new boys, Ryan Dow, scored the third within seconds of coming on when he drove home from 18 yards out.

Meanwhile, former Hearts defender Danny Grainger played the full 90 minutes as a trialist for St Mirren last night as the Paisley side continued their uninspiring pre-season campaign by conceding a 3-2 defeat to Queen of the South.
