Danny MacAskill goes to Gran Canaria for latest stunt video

The street bike riding sensation cycles jumps and bunny hops his way from the highest rooftops of Spanish island Gran Canaria.

The video, filmed on a GoPro camera showing the cyclist’s point of view, builds to a dramatic finale of him leaping off a hill and flipping into the sea on his bike.

Danny, who is originally from the Isle of Skye, initially turned down lucrative offers to show off his stunts because he said he didn’t want to be famous.

However, the 29-year-old now spends his time travelling the world performing daredevil stunts for adverts, promotional videos and documentaries.

Speaking about his latest stunt, which was filmed in the town of Las Palmas, he said: “We’ve been working on this new film for quite a while now.

“Originally I had the idea to do a film on rooftops about two years ago, and it was obvious that GoPro would be the partner to do that film with.

“Basically the film consists of me starting on top of a hill in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria on top of a building. I use the rooftops to make my way down to the sea in the end, doing various tricks and riding along various ledges along the way.

“Generally the locals in Las Palmas were really welcoming. We went knocking on the doors asking if we could get up on top of the rooftops.

“They were very welcoming and next thing would be I had to bring my bike up there. I think it would have been very difficult to do that anywhere else in the world.

“The whole trip was an amazing experience. We had a team of friends from Scotland who I normally work with in my previous projects. But also working with the GoPro production team was so much fun.

“Though the riding itself was on a quite high level, so I had to be on top of my game. Really having the entire team behind me was an enjoyable time.”

The five-minute film, called Cascadia, was released today with a message from Danny which read: “Definitely had a little fear in the eyes making this.”

Earlier this year, figures from Danny’s personal company revealed he had raked in more than Pounds 500,000 from his daring feats.

His company accounts show the street-bike riding sensation, who became a star after posting videos on the internet, has seen his income soar.

Last year, he returned to his home turf of the Isle of Skye to make The Ridge which saw him take his bike on to the Cuillin Ridge, including the Inaccessible Pinnacle rock formation.

After pulling stunts at the summit of Sgurr Dearg, Danny dismantled his £7,500 bike and abseiled 150ft off the outcrop for the video.

His parents feared he might kill himself on the 7.5-mile ride which has had more than 37 million YouTube hits.

His original bike stunt video called Inspired Bicycles was posted on YouTube in 2009 and has been watched more than 35 million times.

He has practised his blend of BMX and street trials stunts for more than 16 years.

His original video was followed up with the seven minute Way Back Home, in which he tackles stunts at famous locations en-route from Edinburgh to Skye, which has been viewed 33 million times.
