Two defeats last month in Wales and Belgium left the Scots with just two points from four matches in Group A.

Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan and president Campbell Ogilvie were due to hold talks at Hampden today to discuss Levein’s position, before reporting to the rest of the governing body’s board members.

The former Hearts and Dundee United boss was already under pressure after two draws at home to Serbia and Macedonia, and the losses in Cardiff and Brussels place him in a perilous position.

Speaking last night, Levein said: “I had a chat with Stewart Regan and Campbell Ogilvie earlier in the week and I believe I will find out at the beginning of next week.

“They have assured me a decision will be made before we announce the squad to face Luxembourg on Tuesday.”

Scotland’s last match of the year is a friendly in Luxembourg on November 14.

The Scots return to action in another friendly against Estonia at Pittodrie on February 6 before the World Cup qualifiers resume when they host Wales at Hampden on March 22.

Levein added: “I’m proud to be the manager of Scotland and want to continue in the job.”
