Colin Stein urges Rangers to re-sign Kris Boyd

COLIN Stein, scorer of two of the most important goals in Rangers’ history, believes the recapture of Kris Boyd would expedite a return to the top flight for the Ibrox club.

The striker netted the first goal in the 1972 European Cup-Winners’ Cup final and, in his second spell, headed into the Hibs net in 1975 to secure Rangers’ first title in 11 years and prevent Celtic from achieving ten in a row.

If those efforts represent quality, it is the quantity that Boyd will provide in the Championship next season that convinces Stein he should be recaptured.

Stein, 66, said: “Kris was notoriously called a lazy player but his job was to score goals and he scored a lot of them. He is the top scorer in the SPL so there is nothing wrong with his credentials.

“I always like to see goalscorers. He has done well at Kilmarnock and he will get more chances if he came back to Ibrox. I came back but was passed my sell-by date. We did win the league to break Celtic’s monopoly, which was a great memory. I think Kris is a natural goalscorer and they are hard to come by. You never see him for 89 minutes and then he scores a goal and that’s what being a top striker is all about,

“You don’t do your work on the right or the left wing – you do it in the box. In the Championship I think he would score a barrowload. I hear Hearts are after him too and they could be stronger next season because the youngsters will be more settled.”
