Climber rescued amid ‘appalling’ conditions in the Cairngorms

Mountain rescuers working in “appalling” weather have found an injured climber in the Cairngorms.

The teams have been working to get the man off the mountain.

No information on his condition is currently available.

Braemar, Aberdeen and Cairngorm mountain rescue teams were alerted on Sunday afternoon after the climber was reported to be injured on the Cairngorm Plateau near Ben Macdui.

Police Scotland said officers were alerted to the incident at 2.25pm.

Braemar mountain rescue team (MRT) tweeted the weather conditions were “appalling”, while Cairngorm MRT described the weather as “challenging”.

The teams, aided by a Coastguard rescue helicopter, carried out a search of the area where the climber was thought to be, with visibility described as “very poor” and high winds hampering the operation.

In an update, Cairngorm MRT later tweeted: “CMRT groups have located missing person and are arranging evacuation.

“This will be protracted given the weather conditions. No update on casualty condition currently available.”

A police spokeswoman said of the teams: “They have traced the male and they are evacuating him from the mountain.”
